Tobin "Toby" Seville is a main character in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. He is Dave's childish and work-shy cousin, the Chipmunks' other caretaker and their adopted cousin once removed (as of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip after Dave adopts the Chipmunks as his official sons). He is a slacker who loves to play video games. He filled in as caretaker for his injured grandmother, Jackie, whom he was living with at the time while she was incapacitated.

Bad Qualities

1. The main problem with Toby is that he is a generic "loser" character who was a laughing stock when he was at school and forced to drop out.
   • He is also pointless to the point he suffers numerous problems in this movie.
2. He still lives with his grandma and is unemployed, which is lazy and poorly represented of real-life issues.
3. When he gets the luggage at the airport, he accidentally knocks over Jackie, her aunt, causing him to take care of the Chipmunks as a result.
4. While not as bad as Dave, he isn't the best at watching the Chipmunks, like focusing on his game while the boys did their own thing at the house.
5. He has some unfunny moments, most notably, that idiotic and useless scene where he invites Theodore (who has nightmares) to sleep with him for the night, and after Theodore enters under the rug, he releases a huge fart Dutch oven which scares Theodore, despite the latter's humorous reaction.
   • However, he does have some hilarious moments at the "Good Qualities" section, but still.
6. He can be clumsy such as when he accidentally destroyed some of the school's instruments.
7. He can be messy, as seen when he leaves his food all around Dave's house.
8. He has this awkward shyness towards his crush, Julie Ortega, for most of the movie, and even at the dance off, where he could have delayed the dance until Alvin arrived, but he couldn't due to his crush being there. Really, dude?
9. Like Claire Wilson from first film, he is forgotten after the next remaining two (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip) films.
10. He didn't bother to tell the Chipmunks how he was bullied when he was younger, so he can act cool in front of the boys (though the boys do make a funny comeback, asking him if being "awesome" in school is why he: still lives with his grandma, refers to himself as the "Tobster", and go "Pew-pew-pew" all day).

Good Qualities

1. Zachary Levi (who would later portrayed Shazam in his own live action film series of the same name based on the comics from DC Comics) actually does a fine job playing as him, and he clearly has a fun job playing as Toby Seville, but even at that, it's clear that this isn't his best performance. But hey, at least it's still better than most of the bad and laughable acting from the other actors playing their characters.
2. He is definitely not the worst of the live-action characters, as he's usually nicer and kinder than most of the others. He can even be considered the thirteenth best (unlucky number thirteen is honestly not that bad considering he is only behind twelve tolerable/good characters and above the much more unlikable characters, especially his cousin Dave) after Alvin, Simon, Theodore, Brittany, Jeanette, Eleanor, Claire Wilson, Ian Hawke, Dr. Rubin, Julie Ortega, Miles and Ashley Grey.
3. Admittedly, he said sorry to his aunt, Claire, because he accidentally knocks her over while attempting to get the Chipmunks' luggage.
4. He does have some good jokes, like the scene where Ian calls Dave's phone, and he said "Ian Hawke?", before Alvin tells him he's got this and he gives the phone to Alvin.
5. He does care about the Chipmunks, Dave, and Julie, and he shows his care for the boys much more than Dave does, like when he looked all over the school for Alvin during the dance off, and when he was climbing into the zoo to help save Theodore. Also, his crush on Julie is cute.
6. While it is part of his generic "loser" character, it is nonetheless sympathetic and relatable that he got bullied when he was younger.
7. At least he immediately regrets his mistakes, like when he was worried about his grandma after accidentally injuring her.
8. The scene where he and Alvin play Wii Sports, but Alvin ends up breaking Dave's TV by throwing a Wii Remote at it is actually quite funny and even accurate to what happens when you don't use the Wii properly back then.
9. He does have some cute moments with Julie and the Chipmunks.
10. He does redeem himself at the end of the film where he delays the music concert while Alvin was saving the Chipettes from Ian, by singing a short song to Julie about how he feels about her, which was a little funny, but also pretty sweet and cute. This benefited Alvin and the Chipettes, as they arrived just in time right afterwards, allowing them and the other Chipmunks to sing together and win the contest, saving their school's music program. It was very sweet to see him and Julie hug while the Chipmunks and the Chipettes were singing.
