    Tingle (The Legend of Zelda)

    Tingle (The Legend of Zelda)
"Tingle, Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah! ...These are the magic words that Tingle created himself. Don't steal them!"
    Gender: Male
    Type: Ugly Manchild
    Age: Unknown
    Species: Human
    Status: Alive
Media of origin: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Tingle is one of the characters who has appeared in varying The Legend of Zelda titles. He is known for wearing green tights with red trunks. He is known for helping the protagonist, Link during his adventures. Despite this he has gained quite a poor reputation among fans and critics alike.

    Fairyless Qualities

    1. Tingle's character design, added with his childish mannerisms, while iconic, is really unappealing to look at. In fact, Ricky the Kangaroo from the Oracle Series refuses to even come near him when he realizes that he is nearby.
    2. For someone who is clearly an adult, Tingle has an extremely flamboyant personality and is known for dressing like a little kid rather than an adult, not to mention that he believed that he is actually a fairy, or an incarnation of a fairy. That, coupled with his immaturity, which can get annoying fast.
    3. Tingle is shown to be on the more irresponsible side, which is brought up by his father, who is the Swamp Tourist Center Guide in Majora's Mask, and it was revealed that he was spoiled at a young age, which contributed to his immaturity.
    4. Tingle barely gets any character development in his appearances in the series.
    5. In Four Swords Adventure, if the player takes too long in gathering Force Gems, Tingle will steal them.
    6. His portrayal in the original The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker game, is at its worst: When his brother, Knuckle built the Tingle Tower when he was only ten years old, Tingle has put a sign that said, "For Tingle Only", essentially not giving Knuckle any credit for his hard work. This understandably makes Knuckle upset by this and it led to him leaving Tingle Island as a result.
    7. Tingle has made Ankle and David Jr. to spin the Tingle Tower 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and aren't seen catching a break or two. The latter wishes that Knuckle was there to spin the tower for him and is noted to hate both his job and his uniform. Additionally, in The Minish Cap, he mentions that he isn't related to him and he doesn't know why he even works for him in the first place.
    8. It doesn't help that his prices for deciphering Triforce Charts, which are part of the story quest for Link to search for the Triforce Shards to return to the lost land of Hyrule, are an all-time high which is a whopping 398 Rupees, which can slow down the pacing of the game when the player doesn't have deep pockets to pay for all eight of them. This makes him come across as a greedy cheapskate.
    9. Because of his unpopularity with players living in the west, his intended roles for Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks got reduced to mere cameos and none of his spinoff titles never got any american releases, only Europe got Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland besides Japan.

    Redeeming Qualities

    1. In Majora's Mask, Tingle, despite being spoiled is shown to be a kind and caring person and does prove to be a valuable character who sells his maps to various people he meets, and it proved helpful to Link, who needed to get to know his surroundings in an unfamiliar world. Also, his prices for the maps for each region, are far more reasonable, with the highest price being 40 Rupees.
    2. He has funny moments here and there, like shooting down his balloon and he falls down as he yells in alarm, also when he was an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl he can be helpful to the summoning fighter, or he will just float away.
      • A special mention goes to the moment in Breath of the Wild which when Link wears the whole Tingle Outfit set, which will cause various NPCs to either draw their weapons or freak out just be looking at him when he tries to interact with them.
    3. In the remake, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD has reduced the number of Triforce charts down to three with only six Shards being found immediately, which helps to make Tingle's prices slightly lower, which helps keep the pacing steady.
    4. In Hyrule Warriors, Tingle is a competent fighter who holds his own in battle and he takes out enemies in a bizarre fashion, which is fitting for Tingle, not to mention this is the most tolerable version of him to date, and the players who gave him a chance by playing as him started to appreciate him a little bit, even if it wasn't a major save.

    Trivia

    • While Tingle is clearly unpopular, it mainly stems from the Western players, while he was quite popular with Japan to the point where he stars in his own Tingle spin-off titles.
