Hiruzen Sarutobi

Hiruzen Sarutobi (猿飛ヒルゼン, Sarutobi Hiruzen) was the Third Hokage (三代目火影, Sandaime Hokage, literally meaning: Third Fire Shadow) of Konohagakure. A disciple of the village's two previous Hokage, Hiruzen was a powerful ninja, hailed as a "God of Shinobi". Though he was only ever directly the teacher of the Sannin, generations of Konoha shinobi benefited from his wisdom during his lifetime.

Since he has done some terrible things, he has been hated by Naruto fans across the world.

Why He Sucks

1. To start, although he is Hokage, he has done some terrible things to the Hidden Leaf Village.
2. He gave Danzo permission to create Root, which caused many members to be taken from their families and clans, and caused them to be trained intensely, and caused them to become emotionless.
3. Speaking of Danzo, he didn't try to stop any of his actions, and just let him off scot-free.
4. He didn't even choose another person to become Hokage if he died, which he did. This made the Hidden Leaf Village look weak for a while until Tsunade was chosen.
5. When he found out that Orochimaru was experimenting on humans, he just let him off scot-free, which caused many problems for the Hidden Leaf.
6. He allowed the Chunin Exams, a deadly exam that allows children killing each other. This goes against the original purpose of the Hidden Leaf Village, which was so that children would no longer kill each other.
7. He decided to become Hokage again after Minato died, even though he clearly said before that he was retiring. This shows that he is too lazy to choose a new Hokage.
8. He didn't even try to stop the Uchiha Clan massacre, as he went against Itachi's idea, and went with Danzo.
9. He mistreated Naruto a ton, even though Minato and Kushina told him to take good care of Naruto, as he gave him expired milk, barely gave him money, made him spend his entire childhood alone by himself, and didn't do anything to make the villagers believe he isn't a monster.
10. He doesn't care about Asuma and Konohamaru's feelings, as he is too busy to take care of his family. While Naruto is also too busy to take care of his family in Boruto, at least he occasionally does come home and take care of them, unlike Hiruzen.
11. He never kept an eye on the sand and sound ninjas during the Chunin Exams, which caused the village to become invaded, and almost destroyed.
12. In Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2, he was reincarnated by Orochimaru to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village, yes, he was reincarnated to destroy the village he loved most, although this can be blamed on Orochimaru.
13. He never scolds his grandson, Konohamaru, even in one of the first episodes, when he literally tried to KILL HIM!
14. Even though Orochimaru had some darkness inside of him, he still continued to train him, and almost chose him to become the next Hokage, which is a terrible decision.
15. When Asuma returned home after an extremely dangerous mission that cost him the lives of his friends, Hiruzen never said anything to him, even though he was at the front gate and Asuma was devastated. This shows that he doesn't care about the feelings of others.
16. While he thrived for peace, however when it came to the overall political stance of the shinobi world, he wasn't firm enough and never seemed to have the strength to handle it.
17. Overall, he was the one responsible for some terrible events in the series.

Good Qualities

1. His design is great.
2. He was redeemed in his epic fight against Orochimaru, as he defeated the reincarnated previous Hokage, called out Orochimaru for using his students, Zaku and Kin, as sacrifices for the reincarnation. sealed Orochimaru's arms and sacrificed himself to protect his village and stop Orochimaru's invasion.
3. He was massively improved when he was reincarnated during the Fourth Great Shinobi War, as he acted like a true hero, helped the Shinobi Alliance stop Madara and Obito, worried about Orochimaru using him to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village, felt guilty that things could have been better if he was alive, saved Naruto from the Ten-Tails chakra-absorbing roots, helped pull the tailed beasts from Obito's body, almost freed Tsunade from the Infinite Tsukuyomi and entrusted the future to Team Kakashi.
4. His voice actors do a great job at voicing him.
5. His death was rather sad, and his death improved Konohamaru's behavior, and caused him to become a better ninja.
6. He knows almost every ninjutsu in the series, which is rather impressive.
7. While he did mistreat Naruto a lot, he did have a heartwarming moment with him in a childhood flashback episode, where he helped a very young Naruto cook some fish, had a nice chat over a fire and they both laughed when Naruto farted.
8. The Naruto franchise wouldn't be the same without him.
