Dante is the main protagonist of the 2013 action-adventure game DmC: Devil May Cry, a reboot of the Devil May Cry series set in a parallel universe to the mainline series. Just like his mainline counterpart of the same name, He is a demon-angel hybrid known as a Nephilim, who lives as a demon hunting vigilante. He is counted by the officials of his hometown of Limbo City as a member of an organization of "terrorists," and is being pursued by both national and worldwide authorities. Dante himself is a young and rebellious social punk outcast. He lives and fights in Limbo City, where demons seemingly influence every aspect of the world and the social condition of the humans living there.
This article will only focused on the rebooted incarnation of Dante.
Bad Qualities
- To get the Devil out of the fire, This version of Dante was terribly reimagined into some weird anti-authority punk. Unlike his original counterpart, this Dante is a very foul-mouthed prick who cares too much about himself, constantly brings out his middle finger, and gets angry easily. He's very mean-spirited, rude, and overall lacks charm compared to the original.
- Yes, Dante has cursed in the original (he once called a creepy man a "pudgy f***" in the anime) from time to time, but not to the point he's trying way too hard to be cool and insulting his enemies with the word "f***" often.
- Hence the name, this version of Dante feels so removed to the one that fans were familiar over the years, that he seems more like a much edgier version of his nephew Nero than Dante himself.
- There is also the infamous scene has a white wig fall on top of Dante and his response of "Not in a million years" as if to mock fans of the older games.
- He admits he enjoyed watching Mundus and Lilith's child's gruesome death which is messed up considering that the child didn't do anything wrong.
- Which it doesn't make sense either when Dante was shocked and baffled that Vergil shot them both, so it does not look like he enjoyed watching the death one bit.
- His redesign is awful and very unrecognizable compared to his mainline counterpart, instead of the iconic red coat and long white hair, he often has short black hair with an undercut, and a dark grey coat, making him look like an angsty emo 14-year-old or a punk rock star.
- His Devil Trigger is just a palette swap of his original design (white hair and red coat), rather than the mutated giant devil of the original games. Which is just lazy.
- He's a hypocrite as he fights Vergil when he plans to put the world under his protection but when Dante defeats Vergil, he states the world is under HIS protection, which is the same thing Vergil was trying to do anyway.
- This version of Dante is playable in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale over the original Dante, even though DMC fans never liked him, and the reboot game wasn't even released at the time when All-Stars came out, making his inclusion an advertisement.
- Other than to finding a new audience for DMC, there was no reason why this Dante (or in this case, Devil May Cry as a whole) had to be rebooted into an alternate/parallel universe, since it's predecessor Devil May Cry 4 is well liked by fans, and didn't even sour the series one bit.
- The game and his characterization is why the Devil May Cry franchise became dormant (due to said fan backlash) until 2019 with Devil May Cry 5.
Good Qualities
- Although he lacks the character's personality, he is still almost faithful to the original Dante. Like his weapons and some of his lines.
- His sword and guns don't feel any different compared to the original games.
- Even with his iconic moves such as the Royal Guard and Trickster not being present, the inclusion of the angel and demon weapons make up for it.
- His insult: "YOU'RE AN A**HOLE!" to Mundus is pretty funny.
- He still has development at the very least.
- Since he is a parallel counterpart of the mainline Dante, he is at least non-canon.
- He can still be stylish at times.
- When he's not swearing like a sailor, he does have badass quotes:
- Game over.
- I'm taking you off the air!
- Ebony, Ivory, I missed you girls.
