In the cartoon and live-action commmunities, a punching bag is a character that is commonly part of a running gag. Either it's funny when they deserve it and get what's coming to them, or just get treated badly anyway and be cowards to stand up to themselves in any way. Some of these characters can sometimes tolerate the abuse they receive for whatever reason.
