    Buzz Lightyear (Lightyear)

    Buzz Lightyear
"I'm Buzz Lightyear! I'm always sure!"
    Gender: Male
    Type: Flanderized Protagonist
    Age: Unknown
    Species: Human
    Portrayed by: Chris Evans
    Status: Alive
    Media of origin: Lightyear

Buzz Lightyear, or simply Buzz, is the deuteragonist of the Disney/Pixar Toy Story franchise.

Sadly, he was flanderized in his own spin-off feature film Lightyear.

    Bad Qualities

    1. Instead of being his usual intelligent, sensible, rational, heroic, and sympathetic delf, he is depicted as a practical and resilient yet unlikable hero and acts like an egotistical, insufferable, rude, petulant, single-minded, and incompetent jerk we are supposed to root for, but it's almost hard to sympathize with him.
    2. He makes plenty of jerkishly arrogant or questionable decisions throughout the film, which certainly highlights the good and bad in his portrayal, as he is the protagonist.
    3. His motivation for helping Star Command is done in a way that gets old. He constantly states that his single motivation is to "finish the mission", and it is overused to the point of getting stale and grating.
    4. After he makes the foolish mistake of piloting Star Command's spaceship and becomes the very reason for everyone being marooned, he becomes so broody that he decides to give up being in Star Command out of pure self-doubt. The Buzz we all know and love would not beat himself down that easily. He may be disappointed or upset about it at first, but he would snap back into his good 'ol determined and optimistic self (especially when you think about his inspiring speech in Toy Story 2).
    5. He is the very reason for his future counterpart, Zurg, to exist. What is worse is that in the future, he becomes and obsessed warlord who betrays everyone on T'Kani Prime, conquers the planet, and tries to wipe them out by attempting to travel back in time to prevent his mistake, which would only make things worse, as it would create a time paradox.
    6. His dislike for rookies makes him come off as annoying, childish, dismissive, reclusive, and stubborn.
    7. It is baffling that he treats Sox, his robot pet cat, more respectfully than the group of rookies that sides with him, especially with how he protects Sox from Star Command, but often yells at or dismisses the rookies in a condescending, irritable, and reclusive manner. It is very hard to tolerate his reclusive attitude, and it goes against his likable traits shown in the Toy Story films.
    8. He makes too many Buzz Lightyear references from Toy Story.
      • In particular, his most famous quote, "To infinity and beyond!", is overused.
    9. Stunt casting: Even though Chris Evans does a good job voicing him, it feels like he replaced Tim Allen due to his high popularity as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    Good Qualities

    1. He was a much better character in the Toy Story films and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and he does redeem himself in the end.
    2. Despite all of his flaws, he can be viewed as a sympathetic protagonist at times, as he does have good intentions with helping Star Command find their way home in an individualistic and experimental way despite his irritating behavior and problematic decisions.
    3. While not as good as Tim Allen, Chris Evans still does a good job voicing him.
    4. His design is good and stays true to his design in the Toy Story films.
    5. Since the film is an origin story for thee Buzz seen in the Toy Story films, this version of Buzz shows that he was not always likable and, it makes sense that heroes can start off like this in their origin stories, though this could've been executed better.
