    Bowser Jr. (Bowser Jr's Journey)

    Bowser Jr. (Bowser Jr.'s Journey)
    — Bowser Jr's reaction to his flanderization in Bowser Jr.'s Journey.
    Gender: Male
    Type: Redeemed Scrappy
    Age: 5-6
    Species: Turtle
    Portrayed by: Caety Sagoian
    Status: Alive
Media of origin: Bowser Jr.'s Journey
    First appearance: Super Mario Sunshine

Bowser Jr. is one of Mario's antagonists in Super Mario franchise, starting from Super Mario Sunshine.

He starred as a main character in Bowser Jr.'s Journey in Mario & Luigi: Bowser Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey but got flanderized here.

    Bad Qualities

    1. Bowser Jr. was flanderized from a bratty kid with cunning and clever strategy to become a future king into a spoiled, bossy kid with self-confidence and highly manipulative leader who belittles his Koopalings and forces other minions to deal with his dirty work.
    2. He is also stupid at times, like being off at math, not understanding Ever-Ice, despite knowing it before, and getting a red Oho Jee to believe that it is an Omega Onion.
    3. In the opening scene, he rides a Blorb Goomba while Bowser and Kamek are having a conversation. While Bowser knocks down the Blorb Goomba with a single punch, there is a plot hole of how the former gets it.
    4. When Bowser Jr. looks at the Blorb Goomba, he plays around in circles and acts silly as if he is too childish.
    5. He forces the Goombas to fight a countless amount of times because he wanted to win, showing his lack of respect when it comes to fighting with mercy.
    6. He is shown to be terrible at Math after battling, as stated by Captain Goomba where his "Math seems to be off".
    7. How does Bowser Jr. got a Mechakoopa after fighting an army of Goomba lots of times? Maybe that can really a gift or he just steals it for unknown reasons.
    8. During battles with Goomba, Shy Guy, Koopa Troopa, Boo, and the remaining Koopalings, Ludwig teaches Bowser Jr. on how to engage battles by defeating the leader, learning the triangle, making tactics by forming his squad members into a team, understanding commands, etc., but the latter ignores his attention and yells out "LA, LA LA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!," "BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!" and "DUH!" (at one point for the latter two). This shows that he never takes criticisms and he is there to win battles.
    9. He answers back to Captain Goomba by telling him to do 15 battles when he gets back into Bowser's Castle (we kid you not), despite the latter's favor of protecting the castle, alongside his captains and Lemmy.
      • He also answers back at Wendy after the latter tells him about enemy profiles, by yelling "Gets angry at the drop of a hat." Causing Wendy to lash out at him for letting Roy not messing her profile. However, he also says that Roy is not wrong, causing her to lash out even more.
    10. He calls Morton a "glory stealer" after Wendy tells him that Morton stepped in to protect him. Morton apologizes as a result.
      • In the same scene, Morton gives the paintbrush to Bowser Jr. but he got that in the last minute rather than giving it early, compared to the one he gives the Charred Drumstick before. This causes him to say sorry because Bowser Jr. calls him and the other Koopalings worthless.
    11. He seems to be impatient when he finds the Giga Carrot, causing him to throw a tantrum.
      • He tells Squiggler about hot wings or a steak because he does not want to talk about eating carrots and showing the Giga Carrot to Bowser.
      • After seeing the Giga Carrot, he immediately bites it to show it to Iggy and Morton, as well as Kamek, which makes him a hypocrite.
    12. His absolute worst moments are abandoning Roy in Dimble Wood and Iggy in Cavi Cape:
      • In the case of Roy, he argues that Bowser Jr. will become a fertilizer when he is not around. While Roy is right about him getting mad and calling him tough and for being too selfish or rude, the latter tells Bowser about this situation. However, the former abandons him for his behavior.
      • In the case of Iggy, he tells him to get out babbling nonsense. He stays on a cliff and watches the sunset, but Dieter of the BFF knocks him over the water. This causes Kamek to remind Bowser Jr. to save him, but he ignores his attention. Showing, once again, that he did not take criticisms.
        • He also abandons Larry and Wendy, but they are due to Kaley's attention in believing that Bowser's Castle is under attack by Fawfulcopters.
    13. He makes his own clown car from Iggy without the latter's consent, despite Iggy getting lost at shore and becomes brainwashed in Plack Beach.
    14. He cares about the ingredients for the Skeletone rather than paying attention to the other Goombas who invite him, Kamek, and Morton for the show. This shows that he lacks discipline.
      • This happens again in Blubble Lake where he forces Broque Madame to make 200 Sekeletone Formula :Ds to his minions.
    15. When he landed in Plack Beach, he decided a rematch with Morton, who was possessed by eating a single Malatone Formula :X. Though Kamek restrained him properly by telling him that cannot defeat him and the BFF by himself.
    16. Even during his character development, he forces Kamek to offer some food, despite having Charred Drumstick in his pocket.
    17. When he encounters Mario, Luigi, and Starlow, he starts a fight, especially when Starlow calls him "Tiny Bowser". Kamek is right about not making new enemies and Bowser Jr. finally shows remorse to her. Starlow tells Bowser Jr. that his father is working hard.
    18. While Roy rejoins the squad after a 1 vs. 1 battle with Bowser Jr. the latter tells him about what he has done and blurts out "I'm sorry!" before leaving. Although his apology accepted, it is not enough considering that he treated very badly in Dimble Wood for his terrible behavior. To be fair, Lemmy tells Roy that Bowser Jr. straights up apologize and he finally accepts.
      • Sure he apologizes Roy before this, but he is not felling well from fighting too many Malatone minions.
    19. There is a missed opportunity before engaging with BFF, Bowser Jr. should have learn the past by taking care of his Koopalings, as seen by them who want to treat him with respect. This is what the first half of the story should have been.
    20. Overall, his character is the reason why the remake got a slightly lower score compared to the DS version, which got critically acclaimed, despite being an improvement of the original; however, that one is still a good game.

    Good Qualities

    1. His character arc in the game is interesting, like the Captains from the previous game.
    2. Bowser Jr. was a much better and likable character in the games prior to Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey and he managed to redeem himself in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, discounting remakes (New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe), cameos (Super Mario Maker 2), and playable characters who appear at random (Dr. Mario World and Mario Kart Tour).
      • Bowser Jr. in the second half shows his proper character development and he redeems himself at that time. This is likely due to Kamek telling him that he needs to respect after the latter is washed up ashore in Plack Beach.
      • Kamek even tells Bowser Jr. that Bowser adores his minions because his real power lies with them and he can defeat BFF, despite having no interactions with them.
      • On top of that, he was also redeemed in his next RPG appearance, where his Paper Mario: The Origami King counterpart is better than his Mario + Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story: Bowser Jr.'s Journey counterpart, Paper Mario: The Origami King, thus reverting back to his bratty, troublemaking yet clever and loving self.
    3. He does treat Koopalings with respect in the second half.
      • In one scene, Morton gives a charred drumstick to him and says, "Ok, big guy. I'll, uh, eat it later", showing that it is a heartwarming scene in the first half.
    4. As usual, his design is good.
    5. Caety Sagoian did a good job voicing him, despite only make grunts and noises.
    6. Him encountering Captain Koopa Troopa while the latter cracks jokes, thus making a confused expression is quite hilarious.
    7. Him fighting with Roy in a 1 vs. 1 battle is satisfying, since the latter becomes brainwashed after fighting back with Goombas, Shy Guys, Boos, and Koopa Troopas while getting lost.
    8. He gets his comeuppance from Bowser when he accidentally drinks a bottle of Skeletone Formula :D, therefore, he chases him at the castle.

    • The reason why Bowser Jr. scolded and abandoned his Koopalings (except Lemmy, who guards Bowser Castle instead) and forces his minions for his harsh training is because he wanted to show off for Bowser, thus leading to the events of the first half.
