Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are a fictional animated trio and titular characters of the 1998-2005 American animated television series The Powerpuff Girls and its 2016-2019 reboot. While they were great characters in the original series, sadly, the trio were both flanderized and derailed in the 2016 reboot.

Why These Imposters Are Not the Perfect Little Girls

    1. Cartoon Network did an abrupt voice actor change in them, especially Bubbles, and even in the Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs. Even Tara Strong, the original voice of Bubbles, was offended by the change, saying: "I don't remember ordering a stab in the heart today" on Twitter/X.
    2. The girls were severely flanderized and derailed beyond recognition in this incarnation and lost all the charm from the original, to the point that they fit more to the Teen Titans Go! versions of the original Teen Titans than the girls' original 1998 counterparts;
      • Blossom is practically nowadays an overreacting, neurotic nerd who suffers from OCD, and is often a stereotypical, bratty, mean-spirited leader.
      • Bubbles is now a "girly", psychotic, annoying, ditzier, goody-two-shoes crybaby, who lost all character development.
      • Buttercup is nowadays nothing more than a ridiculous bully (which doesn't stay true to her name) who cares mostly about butt jokes (because her name has "butt" in it) and is practically a stereotypical tomboy. Despite being a tomboy, she is often considered the Butt-Monkey of the group, due to how she is often mistreated by both Blossom and Bubbles. While in the case in the original, it was at least fairly rare; it happens in the majority of this reboot.
      • They are so bad that they can even make their 1998 seasons 5 and 6 counterparts better in comparison.
      • Ironically, the makers of the reboot said their intention was to flesh out their personalities, when their aforementioned flanderization above instead does the exact opposite by turning the girls into caricatures of their original 1998 selves.
    3. The girls did a bunch of outdated memes from the early 2010's in the first season; most notably when Bubbles said the "No Me Gusta!" meme as seen in "Tiara Trouble", and the Mojo Jojo Meme Maker. Bubbles even said the outdated “OMG! Yaaaas!” phrase in "Painbow".
    4. Two words: Child sexualization. Blossom was given a "love interest" who's rather too old and she's frequently seen having guilty fantasies about said "love interest".
    5. Their voices can range from passable at best and extremely grating at worst, especially Buttercup's. Their singing is also bad.
      • Natalie Palamides, also in particular, sounds absolutely nothing like E.G. Daily as she makes Buttercup sound too tomboyish and high-pitched, as she tries too hard to sound like a boy, while Amanda Leighton and Kristen Li's impressions of Blossom and Bubbles sound too whiny.
    6. While their appearances mostly hadn't changed, some of their facial expressions can get hideous, uncanny, cringe-worthy, creepy and skipping phases. For example, as seen in "Odd Bubbles Out", in the ice cream shop, when Donny and Chelsea are seen laughing with each other, the camera pans to Bubbles sitting in a high chair. You can clearly see her making a really questionable face expression that resembles either Charlie Brown's face or that of a sad emoji. Heck, even Stimpy, Snoopy, or Patrick Star could make fun of something like this.
    7. Overall, they alongside the 2016 reboot is what permanently killed off the franchise.

    Redeeming Qualities

    1. The three were at least given some more development, such as giving them new superpowers that allow them to project energy and manipulate it into various entities.
      • Speaking of which, Buttercup does still care about her sisters at well just like that she leaves the derbytantes for stoppinɡ that biɡ cockroach monster but the derbytantes did that too for freeinɡ the the sisters.
    2. They were much better and way more tolerable outside of this series, most notably in the original 1998 series.
      • They were also tolerable in the anime, Powerpuff Girls Z, and they even having anime cliches.
      • They were still tolerable and retained their personalities in several episodes, such as the "TTG v PPG" crossover, where they are likable and have their original personalities.
      • Bubbles and Buttercup are more tolerable in seasons 2 and 3.
      • Cartoon Network eventually learned their lessons, and then massively reverted the their next incarnation back to their original personalities in the Teen Titans Go! episode "Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary".
    3. Despite the flaws, Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li, and Natalie Palamides did do passable jobs voicing them.
      • Their Japanese voice actresses (Aki Toyosaki, Sumire Uesaka, and Tomo Muranaka) did passable and much better jobs voicing them than Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li, and Natalie Palamides, and sound closer to the girls' original voice actresses Catherine Cavadini, Tara Strong, and E.G. Daily.
    4. At least the redesigns of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are also minor and still stay true to the original designs, despite WTIANtPLG#6.
      • The redesigns of the girls are also decent and add some minor details, such as giving Bubbles pigtail hair decorations and Buttercup a cowlick.

    Trivia

    • They could possibly be 10 years old as told they had five picture days (picture days happen once a year), yet their appearances haven’t changed.
    • And the Latin America commercials the old PPG meet their 2016 PPG, plus the man say to the girl that the original always are better.
