Toad is a major character from the Mario games and its three animated adaptions by DiC. He is the friend of Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool (aka Peach). Although he retained his look and personality from the games. Toad is seen as somewhat of a sidekick to Mario throughout the show, while Luigi was upgraded to a partner. He was voiced by John Stocker.

Bad Qualities

NOTE: This is only focusing on the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! TV version of him since the video game version of him is more likable, and also because he redeems himself in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 TV show.

1. His character in this show generally feels out of place in the cast. While Mario and his friends are either light-hearted or genuinely heroic, Toad is mostly noisy and obnoxious, and sometimes interferes with the plot of the episode.
2. His distinctively raspy voice performance is below average and pretty annoying with very little emotion and effort put into it. He also speaks in an unnecessarily nasally Brooklyn accent, similar to Scrappy-Doo.
   • He often makes squeaky sounds, which is noticeable whenever he gets grabbed or touches the ground.
3. He is nothing more than the true embodiment of a Scrappy, where he acts way too loud to the point that it will get on your very last nerves.
4. He often does nothing to help Mario and his friends. This is better shown where he can be bratty and whiny sometimes, in episodes like "Koopa Klaus". When Koopa attacked Mario and Co., Toad cared more about his snowboard than helping them, earning him a well-deserved scolding from the Princess.
5. Much like Scrappy-Doo, the way he tries to challenge monsters that are stronger than him to a fight, such as King Koopa, is overwhelmingly annoying and predictable.

Good Qualities

1. Like his game counterpart, Toad is one of Toadstool's most loyal servants and has constantly tried his best to protect Princess Toadstool from Bowser and his Koopa Troop forces until the Mario Bros. arrived to protect her as well.
2. He was a much better character in the game series and as the series progressed, Toad started to become more tolerable and less annoying. In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, he redeems himself, despite complaining about always being left behind in the adventures. He becomes a whole lot better portrayed and much more tolerable and he even allows his friends to live in his house.
3. His character design is admittedly cute and passable, and is overall very faithful to how he appears in the games.
4. His voice acting, while below average and pretty annoying, is passable to hear at times.

Trivia

• According to the episode "Escape from Koopatraz", Toad's father is named Moldy. Additionally, he calls his paternal grandfather Gramps.
• He acts as the tag-along kid in the gang, yet he is also old enough to be an official Mushroom Retainer (a title he himself uses in a few episodes), is legally able to drive, and is close friends with Hercufleas, a middle-aged man.
• Toad's "froggy" voice would be a character trait and direction that would make its way into future game portrayals.
• His quotes in the Brazilian version became memes.
