"You greedy dirtbag!"
Cy The O'Hare Delivery Guy

Aloysius O'Hare, or also simply known by his surname O'Hare or just Mr. O'Hare, is the main antagonist of Illumination's 3rd feature film The Lorax. He is the greedy and manipulative mayor of Thneedville, the founder of O'Hare Air, Morty and McGurk's boss, and Ted Wiggins' arch-nemesis. He was voiced by Rob Riggle.

Why He's Intentionally A Greedy Dirtbag

  1. Just like Mayor Augustus Maywho from the live action adaptation of The Grinch, and Larry Quinn from the live action adaptation of The Cat In The Hat, he mostly exists in this movie to give some more material that the book and mainly there to give Ted's story some dramatic tension in which the original source material didn't have.
  2. He's a stereotypical "evil powerful corporate man" who gives businessmen everywhere a bad name, complete with having surveillance equipment across the town and goons who silence anyone that he deems could be a threat to his immoral enterprise.
  3. There's no proper reason for him to exist since the source material didn't have a true villain, and was mainly a cautionary tale showing that corruption and greed could happen to anyone meaning he’s filler.
    • Or as an alternate, they could have used the villains they already had; an entire family's worth of them. Why wasn't the Once-ler's family the corrupt business owners of Thneedville? They had more personality and interesting traits than him and actual history.
  4. Despite being the "main antagonist" of the film, he gets only approximately 12 minutes of screen time, since most of the film takes place in the Lorax flashback. This doesn't give him nearly enough personality to truly be called a "character".
  5. His character design looks pretty ugly and uncanny, to the point where he looks like an evil Edna Mode down to the hairstyle from Pixar's The Incredibles.
  6. He's terrible at his villain role. He always threatens Ted and the others, but he rarely takes any actual precautions, and when he does, they never work for very long, and he's constantly treated as a non-threat by the other characters.
    • Idiot move: When the people of Thneedville found out the truth about the Truffula trees, he ordered for Ted's final remaining truffula seed to be destroyed... right in front of the townsfolk supporting the return of trees, which leads to him not only losing his business but also getting impeached and being sent flying away. Yeah, smooth move O'Hare.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. His fate (mentioned above) was honestly amusing, and he deserved to be called a "greedy dirtbag".
  2. Say what you want about him, but you have to give him credit for having serious determination in keeping his business alive. Too bad it's not enough to save his character overall.
  3. Some have argued that he and his company SAVED Thneedsville from the destruction caused by the Once-Ler and his family as his empire helped turn Thneedsville into a prosperous city-state.
  4. He is clearly supposed to be disliked as the greedy, callous man he is. Nonetheless, he can be seen as just a funny and incompetent villain.
  5. Rob Riggle does a decent job voicing him, making some memorable quotes.
  6. "Let it die, let it die, let it shrivel up and... c'mon, who's with me? Eh?"

Trivia

  • He has been featured in some and spawned a few Internet memes, especially with his phrase "Let it die, let it die, let it shrivel up and... c'mon, who's with me? Eh?" and "I'm Frankenstein's head ON A SPIDER'S BODY!".
  • It is unknown what happened to O'Hare after the movie, but it may be possible that he died after his jet helmet crashed somewhere.
  • Despite being heavily capitalist, his government could actually be described as a mix of capitalism and socialism as his corporation is state-owned.
